Madison, Wis. - John W. Vaudreuil, United States Attorney for the Western District of Wisconsin, announced that James Davis, 23, Madison, Wis., was sentenced on Friday, Nov. 18, by Chief U.S. District Judge William Conley to 10 years in prison for possessing over 280 grams of crack cocaine with the intent to distribute. Davis pleaded guilty to this charge on September 14, 2011.

On June 29, 2011, Davis agreed to distribute five ounces of crack cocaine to a police informant. Around 11 a.m., Davis was dropped off by his girlfriend at a local restaurant where Davis was told that the drug transaction was to take place. The police observed Davis enter the restaurant for about a minute and then leave. As he exited the restaurant, the police arrested Davis and subsequently found 160 grams of crack cocaine which he had hidden in a garbage can in the men's restroom. Police also searched his girlfriend's apartment on Hammersley Road in Madison, where they found an additional 140 grams of crack cocaine belonging to Davis.

The charges against Davis were the result of an investigation conducted by the Madison Police Department, Drug Enforcement Administration, and Dane County Narcotics and Gang Task Force. The prosecution of the case has been handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney Paul W. Connell.
